Transfer Case Output Shaft Seal Replacement (Rear)

Tools Required
-

J 29162 Rear Retainer Seal Installer

Removal Procedure 

1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. If equipped, remove the transfer case shields. Refer to Shield Replacement.
3. Remove rear propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - One Piece or Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two Piece.
4. Remove the rear output shaft seal.

Installation Procedure 

1. Install the seal.

1.1. Lubricate the seal mating surface with Auto-Trac Fluid GM P/N 12378396.
1.2. Install the seal using the J29162.

2. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - One Piece or Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two Piece.
3. Check the transfer case oil level and add oil as necessary. Refer to Oil Replacement.
4. If equipped, install the transfer case shields. Refer to Shield Replacement.
5. Lower the vehicle.

J 35870 Front Output Shaft Seal Installer (start of production to midyear 1999 seal)
