Programming A New Theft Deterrent Module
Perform this procedure when installing a new theft deterrent module. New theft deterrent modules are unprogrammed.
When replacing a theft deterrent module, it must be programmed to accept the resistance value of the existing vehicle keys to allow PASS-Key(R) II
operation. Otherwise, the theft deterrent system will not operate as designed.
A new, service replacement theft deterrent module is programmed to store the first resistor pellet code it detects.
Important: On Special Equipment Option (SEO) vehicles only (RPO: 9C3, 9C6), the theft deterrent module MUST remain unprogrammed because the
ignition key does not have a resistor pellet. Refer to General Description in this section and to ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSIS for more information.
To program a new theft deterrent module:
1. Install the new, unprogrammed theft deterrent module.
2. Insert one of the customer's ignition keys in the ignition lock cylinder.
3. Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the RUN position.
4. Start the engine to verify system operation.
5. Observe the SECURITY indicator lamp:
A. The SECURITY indicator should turn ON for about five seconds, then turns OFF. This indicates that the new theft deterrent module programming
has been successfully completed.
B. The SECURITY indicator may flash at a rate of one flash per second (or Until the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position), and the engine
starts. This indicates that the new theft deterrent module did not store the resistor pellet code, and the programming is not complete. Check for the
following before repeating this procedure:

The theft deterrent module connector for poor terminal contact.
^
The ignition lock cylinder circuits for opens, or shorts to battery or ground.
^
A faulty resistor sensing contacts.
^
A faulty ignition key resistor pellet.

Important: Before connecting the J 35628 interrogator to the ignition lock cylinder circuit, always verify the customer's ignition key resistor
pellet code. Set the same ignition key resistor pellet code into the J 35628 interrogator by using the key code knob. This will prevent programming
a new theft deterrent module with an undesired ignition key resistor pellet code.
