Wheel Speed Sensor: Description and Operation
Wheel Speed Sensor
The wheel speed sensors consist of a variable reluctance sensor and interconnect wiring. The sensors are located near a toothed ring, when the
teeth of the ring pass by the sensor an AC voltage with a frequency proportional to the speed of the wheel is produced. This voltage signal is sent
to the EBCM.
The front wheel speed sensors are attached to the hub and bearing assembly and the toothed rings are pressed onto the CV joints. Each front ring
contains 47 equally spaced teeth. If any of the teeth on the rings are damaged during front end service, the outer CV joint will have to be replaced.
The sensor is not repairable and the air gap between sensor and ring is not adjustable.
The rear wheel speed sensors and toothed rings are located within the integral rear wheel bearing. The rear toothed rings have 36 equally spaced
teeth. The rear sensor and toothed ring are not serviceable and the air gap between them cannot be adjusted, if the rear wheel speed sensor fails,
the entire wheel bearing and sensor assembly must be replaced.
