e. Remove secondary timing belt.
f.
Install fuel line hoses under camshaft and between lifters to hold lifters in carrier as shown in Fig. 13 .
g. Remove exhaust crossover pipe.
h. Remove engine torque strut and strut bracket on engine.
i.
Remove camshaft carrier bolts and nut, then the camshaft carrier and gasket.
2. Remove righthand camshaft carrier as follows:
a. Remove intake plenum as outlined under Intake Manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold/Service and Repair.
b. Remove timing belt right cover as outlined under Timing Belt. Refer to Timing Components.
c. Remove spark plug wires and oil/air separator hose at camshaft cover.
d. Remove camshaft cover bolts then the camshaft cover and gaskets.
e. Remove secondary timing belt.
f.
Install fuel line hoses under camshaft and between lifters to hold lifters in carrier as shown in Fig. 13 .
g. Remove front engine lift hook.
h. Remove camshaft carrier bolts and nut, then the camshaft carrier and gasket.
3. Remove lifters as outlined under Lifter, Valve. Refer to Service and Repair.
4. Install cam shaft hold-down tool No. J-38613, or equivalent.
5. Remove camshaft sprockets as follows:
a. Remove clamping device from sprocket.
b. Rotate camshafts so flats on camshaft to be serviced are facing up, Fig. 14 .
c. Install camshaft hold-down tool No. J-38613, or equivalent, and torque bolt to 22 ft. lbs., Fig. 13 .
d. Remove camshaft sprocket bolt and washer using camshaft holding tool Nos. J38613 and J-38614, or equivalents.
e. Remove camshaft sprocket using sprocket remover tool No. J-38616, or equivalent.
f.
Remove flat ring from sprocket bore.
6. Remove camshaft carrier thrust plate cover, Fig. 14 .
7. Remove thrust plate and bolts, Fig.14 .
8. Remove camshaft hold-down tool.
9. Remove camshaft by carefully removing it out the back of carrier. All camshaft journals are same diameter and care must be taken when
removing camshaft to avoid damage to bearing surfaces.
10. If camshaft oil seal requires replacement, proceed as follows:
a. Pull seal out with a suitable screwdriver.
b. Install seal using seal installation tool No. J-38619, or equivalent.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. When installing carriers, remove oil from camshaft carrier to cylinder head bolt holes, Fig. 14 .
b. Use petroleum jelly in lifter bores, along with hoses to keep lifters in place.
c. Install new camshaft sprocket flat ring to large bore of sprocket.
d. Wipe camshaft noses with a light coat of oil prior to installing sprockets.
e. Coat camshaft lobes and journals with GM engine oil supplement (EOS), or equivalent.
