Monte Carlo V6-204 3.4L DOHC VIN X SFI (1996)
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Timing chain as outlined under Timing Chain / Service and Repair.
2. Tensioner mounting bolts then the tensioner.
3. Inspect tensioner for wear, cracks or other damage.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Tensioner to engine block, using upper attaching hole as primary locator with attaching bolt. Tighten all bolts finger tight, then the slotted hole
bolt first to 27 Nm (20 ft lbs) and then all other bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft lbs).
2. Fabricate tool to retract tensioner.

Bend a 12 inch piece of 1/8 in. welding rod (or equivalent) in half, leaving a 1 inch gap between the two ends.

Make a bend 1 inch from the end, perpendicular to the original bend, at 60°, (figure 1).

Repeat this process for the other end. Make sure both ends are bent in the same direction.
3. Using the fabricated tool, retract the tensioner, (figure 2).
4. While compressing spring, use a suitable tool (cotter pin, rivet, or nail) and insert in hole, (figure 2). Tool MUST be capable of keeping spring
compressed.
5. Lightly coat tensioner chain surfaces with oil.
6. Timing chain.
