Front Cover Bolt Locations
SPECIAL TOOL REQUIRED (or equivalent)

J-38616, Camshaft and intermediate shaft sprocket removal tool.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Secondary timing belt, tensioner mounting bracket and idler pulleys. Note rotation of belt for installation.
2. Engine front lift hook.
3. Both cooling fans and drain coolant into a suitable container.
4. Engine coolant hoses from pump.
5. Heater pipe retaining screws at frame.
6. Starter motor.
7. Crankshaft balancer.
8. Alternator and lay aside.
9. Drain engine oil into a suitable container and remove oil filter.
10. Engine oil cooler assembly.
11. Oil pan front retaining nuts and bolts and loosen all remaining bolts.
12. A/C compressor and lay aside.
13. Lower front cover bolts.
14. Flywheel holding tool in place, then lower vehicle.
15. Intermediate shaft belt sprocket.
16. Forward lamp relay center screws and position relay center aside.
17. Coolant pump pulley.
18. Upper front cover bolts, then the front cover and gasket.
19. Clean mating and sealing surfaces with degreaser.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Front cover gasket, making sure not to damage the sealing surfaces.
2. Apply GM sealer part No. 1052080 (or equivalent) to lower edges of sealing surface of front cover, then install front cover.
3. Upper front cover bolts, applying thread sealant to large bolts. Tighten bolts enough to pull the cover against the engine block.
4. Water pump pulley and oil cooler coolant hose at front cover.
5. Forward lamp relay center screws and upper alternator retaining bolts.
6. Intermediate shaft belt sprocket.
7. Raise vehicle and install the remaining front cover bolts and tighten all to:

Small bolts, 30 Nm (22 lb ft).

Large bolts, 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
8. Oil pan retaining bolts and tighten rear bolts first, then all remaining bolts/nuts to 11 Nm (97 lb in).
9. Crankshaft balancer, then the alternator.
10. Starter motor and the A/C compressor.
11. Engine oil cooler and hoses.
