Brake Pedal Assy: Testing and Inspection

Measure the brakes frequently for pedal travel. Pedal travel is the distance the pedal moves toward the floor from a fully released position. Most low
brake pedal problems are caused by air in the hydraulic system. Bleed the system until all the air is purged from the system. Other less frequent causes
of excessive pedal travel include the following conditions:

Excessively worn linings
^
Hydraulic system leakage
Use the following procedure in order to measure the brake pedal travel:
1. Turn the engine OFF.
2. Pump the brake pedal three times in order to exhaust the vacuum assist from the vacuum brake booster
3. Install the J 28662 into the brake pedal.
4. Hook the end of a tape measure over the top edge of the brake pedal. Measure the distance from the top edge of the brake pedal to the rim of
the steering wheel.
5. Depress the brake pedal with approximately 445 N (100 lbs.) of force while the brakes are cold.
6. Remeasure the distance from the top edge of the brake pedal to the rim of the steering wheel. The pedal travel should not exceed 74 mm (2.91
inch).
