Steering Shaft: Service and Repair
NOTICE: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or
intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so, will cause the SIR coil to become uncentered, which will cause damage to the coil.
Intermediate Shaft Steering Column And Steering Gear Coupling Shaft
Remove or Disconnect
1. Position intermediate shaft seal for access to lower pinch bolt.
2. Pinch bolt at rack and pinion stub shaft.
3. Left-hand instrument panel sound insulator.
4. Reposition intermediate shaft seal to gain access to upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
5. Pinch bolt and disconnect intermediate shaft at the steering column.
6. Intermediate shaft.
Install or Connect
NOTICE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be correct part number for that application. Fasteners
requiring replacement of fasteners requiring thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints,
lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping
force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to
parts and system.
Steering Gear Coupling Shaft To Steering Gear
1. Position intermediate shaft.
2. Upper pinch bolt.
Tighten
-
Pinch bolt to 48 N.m (35 ft. lbs.).
3. Intermediate shaft seal onto steering column.
4. Pinch bolt at rack and pinion stub shaft.
Tighten
