Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Toyota Rack & Pinion Manual Steering Gear
Removal/Installation
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove intermediate shaft cover.
3.
Loosen upper pinch bolt. Remove lower pinch bolt from pinion shaft.
4.
Loosen wheel lug nuts.
5.
Raise and support vehicle.
6.
Remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
7.
Remove cotter pins from tie-rod ends.
8.
Disconnect both tie-rod ends from steering knuckles. Use tool J-24319-01, or equivalent only, to separate tie-rod joints.
9.
Remove steering gear to body mounting nuts and bolts.
10.
Remove steering assembly from vehicle.
11.
Reverse procedure to install. Torque intermediate shaft pinch bolts to 26 ft. lbs., torque tie-rod to knuckle nuts to 36 ft. lbs., gear housing to
mounting nuts and bolts to 43 ft. lbs., tie-rod end locking nut to 35 ft.lbs., inner tie-rod to rack nuts to 61 ft. lbs., and wheel nuts to 76 ft. lbs.
