Brake Shoe: Testing and Inspection
IMPORTANT: Inspect the brake shoe linings whenever you remove the brake drums. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement. Refer also to
Maintenance Schedule in Maintenance and Lubrication section.
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement.
3. Visually inspect the brake lining for the following conditions:

Cracks
^
Chipping
^
Glazing
^
Uneven wear
4. If any of these conditions are noted, replace the brake shoe linings and inspect all of the components of the rear brakes for cause and further
problems.
5. Replace the brake shoe lining whenever the thickness of the lining material is less than 1 mm (0.04 in). Always replace the brake shoe and lining
assemblies in axle sets.
