Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair

Prior to performing replacement procedures, disarm air bag system. Refer to, Service and Repair/ Air Bag System Disarming & Air Bag
System Arming. Refer to, / Specifications/ Mechanical for torque values when installing components. 
All sensors and mounting bracket bolts must be carefully torqued to assure proper operation. Never power up the air bag system when any
sensor is not rigidly attached to the vehicle, since the sensor could be activated when not attached, causing air bag deployment.

SIR coil assembly will become uncentered if steering column is separated from steering gear and is allowed to rotate or centering spring is
pushed down, letting hub rotate while coil assembly is removed from steering column.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then lower or remove steering column.
2. Remove two lower steering column shroud pan head tapping screws from lower steering column shroud, then tilt shroud down and slide back to

disengage locking tabs and remove from vehicle.

3. Remove upper steering column shroud as follows:

a. Remove two upper steering column shroud Torx head screws, then lift upper shroud to gain access to lock cylinder hole.
b. Hold ignition key in Start position, then, using 1/16 inch Allen wrench, push on lock cylinder pin.
c. Release key to Run position and pull steering column lock cylinder set from lock module assembly.

4. Remove shift lever clevis, then the shift lever from vehicle.
5. Remove inflator module.
6. Remove steering wheel.
7. Remove retaining ring, then the SIR coil assembly, Fig. 16.
8. Remove wave washer, then disconnect wire harness strap from steering column wire harness.
9. Disconnect two wire harness straps from steering column wire harness.

10. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Ensure wheels are positioned straight ahead with block tooth and centering mark on steering shaft assembly at 12 o'clock position.
b. Ensure SIR coil assembly is centered. If installing new SIR coil assembly, coil assembly will be pre-centered. Install coil, then remove and

dispose of centering tab.
