Timing Chain: Service and Repair
Engine Front Cover
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove power steering reservoir from radiator shroud then remove shroud.
3. Remove serpentine belt.
4. Disconnect alternator with brackets and set aside.
5. Remove crankshaft pulley and hub.
6. Remove oil pan.
7. Remove crank shaft front cover bolts, then the cover.
8. Pry old seal out with large screwdriver, then clean cover and sealing surfaces as follows:
a. Clean old sealant from block, front cover, and oil pan.
b. Clean oil and grease from sealing surfaces with a suitable solvent.
9. Using crankshaft seal installer and centering tool No. J-35468, or equivalent, install new seal to front cover, lubricating seal with engine oil.
10. Leave tool in position in seal.
11. Apply 3/8 inch wide by 3/16 thick bead of suitable sealer to oil pan at the front cover sealing surface.
12. Apply 1/4 wide by 1/8 inch thick bead of sealer to crankcase front cover at sealing surface.
13. Install crankcase front cover using installer and centering tool.
14. Reverse remaining procedure to install.
