Testing and Inspection for Ignition Control Module
Ignition Control Module: Testing and Inspection
1985
1.
Remove distributor cap from distributor assembly.
2.
Disconnect ignition coil high tension cable from distributor and maintain a .197 inch gap between cable end and ground.
3.
Place ignition switch to ON position.
4.
Connect a 1.5 volt dry cell to the red igniter wiring terminal at its positive side and to the white wiring terminal at its negative side.
5.
The ignition (module) is normal when sparks are generated between the high tension cable and ground.
6.
If there is no sparking, proceed as follows:
a. Check to ensure that the ignition coil is energized when the ignition switch is placed in the ON position.
b. Check continuity of ignition coil. If continuity exists, coil is satisfactory. If no continuity exists, replace coil.
c. If these two checks indicate that the ignition coil is normal, distributor is at fault. Replace distributor, if necessary. Do not apply voltage to
the igniter (module) for more than three seconds.
