Surge Tank: Description and Operation
Air Valve

    The purpose of the air valve is to guide the intake air into the surge tank by bypassing the main bore which has a throttle valve so that the engine idling
speed is increased when the engine is cold.
    Because of the characteristics of the thermo-wax, the air valve opens when coolant temperature is low, closes gradually as the temperature increases
and closes fully at approximately 158°F. As the coolant temperature rises, the idling speed decreases and when the engine is warmed fully, the normal
idling speed is restored.
