Subject: Trailer and Vehicle Brake Lights Do Not Illuminate when Integrated Trailer Brake Control System (ITBC) Manual Trailer Brake Apply Lever
is Used (Reprogram Body Control Module (BCM))

2009 Chevrolet Avalanche, Suburban, Tahoe
2009 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL
All Equipped with Integrated Trailer Brake Control System (RPO JL1)
Condition
Some customers may comment that the trailer and vehicle brake lights do not illuminate when they use the ITBC (RPO JL1) Manual Trailer Brake Apply
Lever on the Trailer Brake Control Panel. This concern will only be noticed when a trailer is connected to the vehicle.
Cause
This concern is a result of the BCM software not updated to the latest version. The lighting calibration in the BCM is not allowing the brake lights to
illuminate when a trailer is connected to the vehicle wiring harness and the customer manually slides the Manual Trailer Brake Apply Lever on the
Trailer Brake Control Panel. The brake lights will illuminate when the brake pedal is applied.
Correction
Reprogram the BCM with the latest software calibration.
Important
Select the correct calibration files for the appropriate vehicle configuration (body style) and RPO codes.
A revised calibration has been developed to address this condition. Technicians are to reprogram the BCM using the Service Programming System (SPS)
with the latest software available on TIS2WEB. Refer to Body Control Module Programming and Setup procedures in SI. As always, make sure your
Tech 2(R) is updated with the latest software version.
