NO: 11-02-96
GROUP: Exhaust
DATE: May 17, 1996
SUBJECT:
Exhaust Cross Over Pipe Rattle/Buzz/Moan
THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 11-06-94 DATED DEC. 9, 1994 WHICH SHOULD BE NOTED IN YOUR
FILES. THE PARTS AND AFFECTED MODELS HAVE CHANGED. ALL CHANGES ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS**.
MODELS:
**1995 - 1996 (JA) Cirrus/Stratus
**NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO DEC 18, 1995 (MDH 12-18-XX) EQUIPPED WITH A 2.5L ENGINE**.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Exhaust rattle/buzz/moan heard as engine warms up. Most noticeable at a constant engine speed between 1700 RPM and 2500 RPM.
DIAGNOSIS:
Verify condition with the following procedure:
1.
Allow engine to cool at least 20 minutes.
2.
Start engine and apply parking brake.
3.
Firmly apply service brake pedal and hold for the remainder of the test.
4.
Shift transmission to "DRIVE".
5.
Slowly increase engine speed from idle to about 2400 RPM and listen for buzz, rattle, moan or metallic type noise.
NOTE:
DO NOT HOLD THE ENGINE SPEED FOR LONGER THAN 30 SECONDS, TORQUE CONVERTER MAY OVERHEAT.
A "CRUNCHING" TYPE NOISE FROM THE FRONT BRAKE PADS MAY BE HEARD DURING THIS PROCEDURE AND SHOULD NOT
BE MISTAKEN FOR THE CROSS UNDER PIPE NOISE.
6.
If the noise can be heard, verify the source of the noise by placing the vehicle on a suitable hoist and repeating the "engine torque" procedure while
slightly prying on the exhaust cross over pipe (a side load can be applied to the pipe by placing a pry bar between the pipe and engine support
module). If the noise level changes as a side load is applied, perform the repair procedure.
7.
If the noise condition cannot be heard, repeat the procedure twice at most. Place transmission in neutral for 1 minute in between test procedures. If
the noise still cannot be duplicated and the customer describes an infrequent buzz or rattle when accelerating, perform the repair procedure.
