Drivers Side Air Bag Not Centered/Horn Operation Erratic

MODELS: 
1995 (JA) Cirrus/Stratus

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The Drivers Side Air Bag (DAB) is not centered to the steering wheel. The horn sounds continuously or the horn pad (DAB) returns to position slowly.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves installing revised steering wheel bridge brackets and foam spacers.

1.

Record the preset radio stations, disconnect and isolate the remote negative battery cable. Allow system capacitor to discharge for 2 minutes
before removing any air bag components.

2.

Remove the DAB module attaching T-30 torx bolts from back side of steering wheel. Lift the module and disconnect the wire as follows:
a.

Lift the secondary latch.

b.

Disconnect connector from the module using the finger grips. Use care not to pull on wires. Never use a metallic tool to pry on connector.

3.

Remove the left and right bridge brackets from the steering wheel by loosening and removing the four shoulder screws (see figure).

4.

Install the revised bridge brackets, make certain the bracket marked "LH", P/N 4856743, is on the left side and the bracket marked "RH", P/N
4856742 is on the right side. Hand start the four shoulder screws.

5.

Confirm that all springs, isolation washers, and isolation bushings are in place.

6.

Torque the shoulder screws to 5.6 Nm (50 in.lbs.).

7.

Install the foam pads, P/N 4856741, on the 3 and 9 o'clock spokes as indicated.

8.

Make air bag connection by pressing straight in on the connector. The connection should be fully seated to assure positive connection. Check that
the wires are not pinched during assembly.

9.

Install the DAB attaching bolts and torque to 9.6 Nm (85 in.lbs.).

10.

Connect the remote negative battery cable.

11.

Perform the Air Bag System Check described on page 8M-3 of the 1995 Cirrus/Stratus Service Manual (Publication No. 81-270-5121)

12.

Set the clock and previously recorded radio stations.
