Neutral Safety Switch: Description and Operation
Park/Neutral Position Switch
The Park/Neutral position switch is located on the front of the transmission. It provides the Transmission Control Module (TCM) with information on
gear shift position. There are two sides to the switch.
One side of the switch provides the TCM, and the starter system with the shift lever position. This circuit, T41, is spliced to the TCM and the engine
starter relay The switch is normally CLOSED and case grounded. If the shift lever is not in the PARK or NEUTRAL position the vehicle will not start.
The other side of the switch is used when the vehicle is placed in REVERSE. Power for this side of the switch is supplied on circuit F11. This circuit
also supplies power to the TCM. Circuit F11 is protected by a 10 amp fuse located in the cavity 11 of the junction block. Power for the fuse is supplied
on circuit A51. This circuit is protected by a 10 amp fuse located in cavity 7 of the PDC.
When the vehicle is placed in REVERSE the closed contacts in the switch connect circuit F11 to T3. Circuit T3 is spliced and connects to the TCM and
the Back-Up Lamp relay
