Shift Point

NOTE:

THIS INFORMATION APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO FEB. 17, 1998 (MDH 0217XX) WITH A 42LE TRANSAXLE.

DISCUSSION:

With the beginning of the 1998 model year, the 4 - 3 coast down shift point was moved to a higher speed (30 mph). This higher coast down point allows
the transaxle to achieve a lower gear quicker, thus improving overall performance. Although this change increases overall performance, some customers
may notice engine braking on the coast down due to it occurring at a higher speed and RPM. For some customers, this new feel is objectionable.

NOTE:

THE FOLLOWING REPAIR WILL CHANGE THE 4 - 3 COAST DOWN SHIFT POINT TO 15-17 MPH AND CHANGE SOME LOW SPEED
KICKDOWNS (15-30 MPH) THAT WERE PREVIOUSLY AVAILABLE.

DIAGNOSIS:

Using the Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS) or the Diagnostic Scan Tool (DRB III(R) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures Manual, verify all
engine/transmission systems are functioning as designed. If no DTC's are present and the customer complains about the above condition, perform the
Repair Procedure.

NOTE:

WHENEVER A TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE (TCM) IS REPLACED DUE TO FAILURE, THE SOFTWARE OF THE
REPLACEMENT CONTROLLER SHOULD BE VERIFIED FOR THE LATEST REVISION LEVEL. USE THE FLASH PROCEDURE TO
UPDATE REPLACED CONTROLLERS AS NECESSARY.

NOTE:

THE MDS AND DRB III(R) ARE REQUIRED TO PERFORM PART OF THIS REPAIR AND THE SYSTEM MUST BE OPERATING WITH
RELEASE 21 OR HIGHER AND TIL CD RELEASE 1159 OR HIGHER MUST BE INSTALLED.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Transmission Control Module (TCM) with new software (calibration changes).

1.

Connect the MDS (Mopar Diagnostic System) and DRB III(R) (Scan Tool) to the vehicle and power them up.

2.

Use the arrow keys arid select # 2 MDS DIAGNOSTICS on the DRB III(R) MAIN MENU Screen.

3.

Use the arrow keys arid select DIAGNOSTIC MENU on the MDS, then press NEXT MENU.

4.

Use the arrow keys arid select VEHICLE CONTROLLER PROGRAMMING on the MDS, then press NEXT MENU.
