Camshaft: Service and Repair
1. If camshaft sprockets are to be removed, proceed as follows:
a. Remove timing belt as outlined under "Timing Belt", Replace".
b. Hold camshaft sprocket with 17/16 inch box wrench to loosen and remove sprocket bolt and washer. To remove bolt with engine in vehicle, it
may be necessary to lift that side of the engine to gain access for bolt removal.
c. Remove camshaft sprocket from camshaft. Each sprocket had a "D shaped hole that allows it to rotate several degrees in each direction on its
shaft. This design must be timed with the engine to ensure proper engine performance.

2. If camshaft oil seals are to be removed, sprockets must be removed and oil seal remover tool No. C-3981B, or equivalent, must be used.
3. Remove cylinder head as outlined under "Cylinder Head, Replace".
4. Mark, then remove rocker arm assemblies as outlined under "Rocker Arms, Replace".
5. Remove rear camshaft cover and O-ring from head.
6. Carefully remove camshaft from rear of cylinder head. Use care not to damage, nick or scratch camshaft journals when removing camshafts.
7. Reverse procedure to install, ensuring camshaft and journals are lubricated with clean engine oil. If camshaft sprockets were removed, they must
be installed and timed to engine as follows:
a. Place crankshaft sprocket at Top Dead Center (TDC) mark on oil pump housing.

b. Install camshaft alignment tool No. 6642-A, or equivalent, to rear of cylinder heads.
