Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Service and Repair

1985 - 88 V8-318

NOTE: 1985 - 88 V8-318 engines are equipped with roller-type hydraulic lifters.

REMOVAL

1.

Remove valve covers, rocker shaft assembly and pushrods, noting installation position so that components can be installed in original position.

2.

Remove intake manifold as outlined in ``Cylinder Head, Replace.''

3.

Remove yoke retainer and aligning yokes,.

4.

Insert puller C-4129 or equivalent through opening in cylinder head, seat tool securely in head of lifter, then pull lifter from bore. If more than
one lifter is to be removed, identify lifters to ensure reinstallation in original position.

Inspection

1.

Inspect bore in cylinder block, and if bore is scored or shows signs of wear or sticking, ream bore and install oversized lifter assembly.

2.

Pry out plunger retaining, then disassemble lifter as shown in Fig. 8. Plunger and body assemblies are not interchangeable, and plunger valve
must always be installed in original body. Disassemble only one lifter at a time to avoid mixing components.

3.

Clean components with solvent suitable for removing all varnish and blow dry with compressed air.

4.

Inspect plunger for scoring, wear and pitting, and inspect valve seat for any condition that may prevent seating. If any defect is found, replace lifter
assembly.

5.

Coat components with clean engine oil or suitable assembly lubricant, then reassemble lifter as shown in.

Installation

1.

Lubricate lifters, then install in original bores.

2.

Install aligning yokes ensuring that arrow points toward camshaft,.

3.

Install yoke retainers and torque screws to 200 inch lbs.

4.

Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation, start engine and run at approximately 15000 RPM until it reaches normal operating
temperature. To prevent engine damage, do not run engine above fast idle until all lifters have filled with oil and become quiet.
