Console: Service and Repair
Console Replacement

CAUTION:  Set parking brake, position automatic or manual transaxle shift lever in neutral, and disconnect battery prior to removing console.

SHIFT KNOB

Automatic transaxle shift mechanism: Remove one 8 mm set screw and pull up to remove shift lever knob.
Manual transaxle shift mechanism: Unscrew shifter knob from manual shift lever.

INSTRUMENT PANEL CENTER STACK BEZEL

1. Remove instrument panel center stack bezel by gently pulling rearward with a slight rocking motion to unsnap retaining clips.

BRAKE COVER

1. Grasp lower edge of brake cover panel and gently pull outward to disengage lower snap fastener.
2. Remove cover by gently pulling upward with a slight rocking motion to unsnap remaining retaining clips.

SIDE CARPET PANEL

1. Remove right side carpet panel by grasping lower edge and pulling outward to disengage 2 snap fasteners.
2. Carefully pull forward upper edge straight outward from instrument panel to disengage retaining clip.
3. Remove left side carpet by grasping lower edge and pulling outward to disengage 3 snap fasteners.
4. Carefully pull forward upper edge straight outward from instrument panel to disengage retaining clip.

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE PRNDL CABLE

1. Loosen hex head screw on right side of shifter mechanism base and disconnect nylon PRNDL indicator cable from shifter bracket.

REAR ASH RECEIVER

1. Grasp upper edge of ash receiver bezel firmly and pull rearward. Pivoting assembly about the lower edge. If removal is difficult. Insert a

thin-edged tool such as a screwdriver between upper edge of bezel and carpet panel (just to the right and left of center) to disengage retaining clip.

REAR CARPET PANEL

1. Disengage rear carpet panel snap fasteners by grasping lower edge and pulling outward along periphery.
2. Free panel by rocking the forward flaps downward slightly and out from beneath console base.
3. Remove panel by slightly spreading forward flaps, tilting panel rearward, and lifting rearward and upward.

SWITCH PLATE ASSEMBLY AND WIRING

1. Push switch plate up and out of console from beneath.
2. Disconnect all wiring harness connectors from switches.
3. Disconnect main instrument panel wiring harness from console wiring harness at forward end of console.

FASTENER

1. Remove rubber mat on floor of armrest stowage bin.
2. Remove two forward cross-recess-head screws from inside armrest stowage area. (Do not remove single rear screw).
3. Remove two forward console mounting hex head bolts, one on either side of forward support bracket.
4. Remove two rear console mounting hex nuts, one on either side of rear support bracket.
5. Remove two cross-recess-head screws which attach forward console "horns" to instrument panel center stack.

BASE CONSOLE

1. Disengage locating pins at instrument panel center stack by sliding console rearward.
2. Complete console removal by moving rearward slightly while lifting upward.

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE CONSOLE

1. Check PRNDL indicator adjustment by slowly moving shift lever from "Park" to "1" and back. A clicking sound indicates that the self adjuster has

been activated. No clicking indicates that the alignment was already correct.

INSTALLATION

1. For installation reverse above procedure.
