Steering Gear: Service and Repair
1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheels.
2. Remove tie rod ends with a suitable puller.
3. Disconnect engine damper strut from crossmember, if equipped.
4. Remove four front suspension crossmember attaching bolts, then lower the crossmember using a transmission jack, so that steering gear can be
disconnected from steering column.
5. Disconnect lower stub shaft from from steering gear coupling.
NOTE: Do not remove roll pin.
6. On models with power steering, disconnect hoses from steering gear.
7. On all models, remove bolts attaching steering gear to crossmember, then remove steering gear from crossmember.
8. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Using an assistant, from inside of vehicle, guide steering column coupling onto steering gear. On models with manual steering, ensure
master serrations are aligned.
NOTE: Right rear crossmember bolt is a pilot bolt that correctly locates crossmember. Tighten this bolt first. Torque all crossmember
attaching bolts to 90 lb-ft.
b. Torque bolts attaching steering gear to crossmember to specifications.
c. Check for oil leaks.
d. Adjust toe. Refer to Steering and Suspension/Tires, Wheels and Alignment/Adjustments.
