1989 Chrysler New Yorker Landau and New Yorker Cars Equipped With Electronic Instrument Cluster
Some of the subject vehicles identified on the enclosed listing may experience intermittent erratic speedometer and odometer displays due to a defective
chip in the engine controller. The defect, if it exists, will cause the speedometer to display a much faster than actual vehicle speed (124 MPH maximum)
and the odometer will record more miles than actually traveled.
We expect that only a small number of the listed vehicles, primarily those operating in cold climate areas, will experience this problem. Also, the
speedometer and odometer readings may malfunction only while the car is cold and may then function properly when the car warms up.
Attached is a copy of the letter being mailed to owners of involved vehicles. They are being instructed to contact their dealer for service if they
experience the erratic speedometer/odometer condition. Upon request, dealers are to service affected vehicles as follows:

For delivered units only, provide a loaner vehicle (gratis) to the owner for the period required to complete this service.

Remove the engine controller (located near the battery) and body computer (located behind the passenger side kick panel) from the affected
vehicle per service manual procedures.

Apply a strip of masking tape to both removed components and identify both with the last 8 digits of the VIN and the vehicle owner's name.
Tape the components together with masking tape.

Fill out the top portion of a WRO (Name, VIN, Date, etc.-- no mileage yet) and insert a copy of the partially completed WRO in a Warranty
Parts Envelope. Retain the original WRO for processing when repairs are completed.

Carefully package both components (one set of vehicle components per package) and the WRO envelope to protect against shipping damage.

Ship the package by overnight express mail (such as Federal Express) to Huntsville Electronics at the following address:

Important:
Arrange for the express mail company to pick up the package immediately for shipment and ship only one vehicle's components - engine
controller and body computer) in each package. Do not ship components from more than one car in the same package.
Huntsville will transfer the true vehicle mileage from the defective, returned engine controller (stored in its memory) into both the returned body
computer and the new engine controller. They will identify the updated body computer and the new engine controller with the VIN and owner name and
return them to the dealer VIA express overnight mail. We anticipate Huntsville's return shipment of components will be about one day after package
receipt.
When you receive the corrected components for a specific car, all that is required is to:

Reinstall them on the vehicle.

Re-calibrate the compass.
^
Set the clock to the proper time.
^
Advise the owner that he will have to re-program the radio to his desired stations.
^
Advise the owner that, following the above service, the vehicle will need to be driven for several miles to allow the electronic controlled
transaxle to reestablish its smoothest shift pattern.
Reimbursement
Claims for vehicles which have been serviced should be submitted by DIAL dealers on the DIAL system. Non-DIAL dealers may use WRO's.
Mileage entered on the claim must be the mileage that is displayed after this service has been completed.
