Power Steering Bleeding: Service and Repair

1. Raise and support front wheels.
2. Manually turn oil pump pulley a few turns.
3. Turn steering wheel to full left and full right five or six times.
4. Disconnect high tension ignition cable, then while operating starter motor intermittently, turn steering wheel full left and full right five or six times.
5. Connect ignition cable, then start engine and run at idle.
6. Turn steering wheel to left and right until there are no bubbles in the reservoir.
7. Confirm fluid is not milky and that fluid level is up to specified position on dipstick.
8. Confirm there is very little change in fluid level when steering wheel is turned to left or right.

1. Raise and support front wheels.
2. Manually turn oil pump pulley several times.
3. Turn steering wheel all the way left and right five or six times.
4. Disconnect high-tension cable, then crank starter motor intermittently, while turning the steering wheel fully to the left and right, five or six times

for 15 to 20 seconds.

5. Be sure to refill the fluid supply during air bleeding so level never falls below lower position of the filter.
6. If air bleeding is done while engine is running, air will be broken up and absorbed into the fluid. Ensure bleeding is done only while cranking.
7. Connect high-tension cable, then start engine.
8. Turn steering wheel to left and right until there are no air bubbles in reservoir.
9. Ensure fluid is not milky, then inspect fluid level.

10. Ensure level does not change when steering wheel is turned left or right.
11. Ensure level is within 0.2 inch when engine is stopped compared to when it is running.
12. If fluid level variation is more than 0.2 inch, air still exists in the system, requiring additional bleeding.
13. If bleeding procedure is not complete, abnormal noises may be emitted from pump and flow control valve which may reduce pump life.
