Repair Procedure

This bulletin involves inspecting and testing the following suspension components in the order listed and making repairs as necessary.

Crossmember attachment
Stabilizer Bar area
Lower Lateral Arm
Upper Arm
Lower Compression Arm

NOTE:

REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL WHEN DISASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING ANY SUSPENSION PART, WHEN
INSPECTING THE TIGHTENING TORQUE, OR WHEN PERFORMING INSPECTION PROCEDURES OF ANY SUSPENSION PARTS.

Crossmember Attachment

1.

Lift the vehicle using a frame hoist to allow the suspension to be unloaded.

2.

Using the appropriate Service Manual (Group 2), locate the six suspension mounting points (two bolts, four nuts).

3.

Check each bolt or nut for proper torque. Torque value for the bolts is 108 Nm (78 ft. lbs.). Torque value for the nuts is 88 Nm (64 ft. lbs.).

4.

Check all suspension related parts (Centermember, Stay Bracket, Roll Stoppers and Brackets, etc.) for looseness relating to their attaching bolts or
nuts. Tighten each one to the specifications found in the applicable Service Manual.

5.

Road test the vehicle and check if the noise still exists. If the noise still exists, proceed to the next area.

Stabilizer Area

1.

Lift the vehicle using a hoist that picks the vehicle up by the tires or put the vehicle on an alignment rack.

NOTE:

THE VEHICLE WEIGHT HAS TO BE APPLIED TO EACH WHEEL DURING THIS OPERATION.

2.

Shake the stabilizer bar by hand to see if there is play between the bar and the bushings (if there is no play, proceed to step 5).

3.

If there is play, replace the stabilizer bushings, see Parts Required section and appropriate Service Manual (Group 2).

4.

If the bushings were replaced, road test the vehicle and check if the noise still exists (if the noise still exists, proceed to step 5).

5.

Check the breakaway torque of the stabilizer link ball joints (see appropriate Service Manual (Group 2).

6.

If the breakaway torque is over the specification of 1.5 Nm (13 in. lbs.), there is excessive axial play over 0.1 mm (.004 in.), or the link is damaged
replace the stabilizer link.

7.

Check for any damage on the stabilizer link dust cover. Replace the cover as necessary.

8.

Road test the vehicle and check if the noise still exists. If the noise still exists, proceed to the next area.

Lower Lateral Arm

1.

Lift the vehicle using a frame hoist to allow the suspension to be unloaded.

2.

Check the free play of the lower lateral arm ball joints following the procedure shown:

a.

Place the wheels in a straight ahead direction.

b.

Remove the front wheels.
