Brake Bleeding: Service and Repair
Antilock Brake System Bleeding Procedures
The BENDIX ABX-4 anti-lock brake system (ABS) must be bled as two independent braking systems. The non ABS portion of the brake system should
be bled the same as any non ABS system. The ABS portion of the system requires the use of a DRB or equivalent scan tool.
1. To bleed the non ABS portion of the system using a pressure bleeder, proceed as follows:
a. Connect pressure bleeder tool No. C-3496-B, or equivalent, and adapter BB400-9A or equivalent to pressurize brake system. Follow
manufactures instructions, for use of pressure bleeding equipment.
b. Attach clear hose to bleeder screw at one wheel, place other end into clear jar. Open bleeder screw one full turn, after four to eight ounces of
fluid have been bled into jar close bleeder screw.
c. Repeat for all wheels in the following order: RR-LR-RF-LF, repeat procedure until no air bubbles appear and brake pedal travel is satisfactory.
2. To manually bleed the non ABS portion of the system, proceed as follows:
a. Connect a transparent hose to caliper bleed screw, and place the other end of hose in a transparent container partially filled with clean brake
fluid.
b. Have an assistant pump brake pedal several times with full strokes of the brake pedal, then hold the pedal under pressure before opening
bleeder screw.
c. Open the bleed screw 1 turn. Keep screw open until fluid no longer comes out from bleeder, then tighten bleeder screw and release brake
pedal.
d. Repeat this procedure until air bubbles are no longer present in fluid coming from bleeder hose.
e. Repeat for all wheels in the following order: RR-LR-RF-LF.
3. Connect DRB scan tool to vehicle diagnostics connector which is located under lefthand side of instrument panel.
4. Set can tool to "Bleed ABS" routine.
5. Apply brake pedal firmly and initiate the "Bleed ABS" cycle, then release brake pedal.
6. Bleed brake system as described in steps 1 or 2.
7. Repeat step 5 until brake fluid flows clear and free of bubbles. Check brake fluid level frequently during bleed procedure to prevent reservoir from
running low.
8. Test drive vehicle to ensure brakes are operating correctly and pedal is solid.
