Power Steering Pump: Testing and Inspection
1.
Drain fluid from power steering system as follows:
a. Disconnect return hose from reservoir tank.
b. With engine idling, turn steering wheel back and forth until reservoir is empty.
c. Shut engine down promptly after reservoir is dry, then connect return hose.

Disconnect discharge hose from steering gear, then connect oil pressure gauge using new O-rings, Fig. 2.

Fill reservoir to the correct level with Dexron II fluid, then bleed by turning steering wheel back and forth a few times with engine idling.
4.
Ensure oil temperature is approximately 122°.
5.
Measure vane pump pressure as follows:
a. With engine idling, close oil pressure gauge fully.
b. Pressure should read 786.5 Psi or higher. Do not close valve longer than 10 seconds.
c. If not as specified, replace pump.
6.
Check pressure difference as follows:
a. Open pressure gauge fully.
b. Note difference in pressure at 1000 and 3000 RPM.
c. If difference exceeds 71.5 Psi, replace pump.
7.
Measure pressure at gear housing side as follows:
a. With engine idling, open pressure gauge fully.
b. Turn steering wheel from lock to lock, observing pressure at locked position.
c. Pressure should read 786.5 Psi or more. If not as specified, replace pump.
