Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Power Steering Gear
Removal/Installation
1.
Raise and support vehicle.
2.
Remove front wheels.
3.
Remove engine splash shields.
4.
On models with power steering, proceed as follows:
a. Drain power steering fluid.
b. Remove the oil tube from the power steering gear. Oil will flow out of port when tubes are removed.
c. Cap all oil tubes and ports opened by removal process.

5.
On all models, remove steering universal joint, Fig. 14.
6.
Separate tie rod end from steering knuckle.
7.
Remove damper weight, Fig. 15.
8.
Remove steering rack housing bracket and bolts, Fig. 16.
9.
Remove steering gear through fenderwell.
10.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque attaching bolts to specification.
