THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 21-13-96, DATED SEP. 20, 1996, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM
YOUR FILES AND NOTED IN THE 1996 TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN MANUAL (PUBLICATION NO. 81-699-97010). ALL 4X4
VEHICLES ARE NOW INCLUDED AND THE ENTIRE REPAIR PROCEDURE HAS BEEN REVISED.
MODELS:
1996-1997 (BR) Ram Truck
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A buzz or clatter may be heard from the 4X4 transfer case shifter at an engine speed of approximately 2000 rpm. The condition may worsen when the
engine is under a load.
NOTE:
THE BUZZ OR RATTLE WILL BE MORE NOTICEABLE ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE 5.9L CUMMINS DIESEL ENGINE.
DIAGNOSIS:
Drive the vehicle to approximately 50 mph. If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, allow overdrive and the torque converter clutch to engage. If
the vehicle has a manual transmission, shift the transmission into overdrive. Accelerate to an engine speed of approximately 2100 rpm (as long as legal
speeds permit).
NOTE:
VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS MUST BE DIAGNOSED WITH THE TRANSMISSION IN OVERDRIVE
AND TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ENGAGED.
Perform the following Repair Procedure if a buzz or clatter is heard coming from the transfer case shifter.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves bending the shift lever spring reaction tab outward to increase the spring tension on the shift lever.

Raise the vehicle on a lift.
