Diesel Dual Battery - Secondary Battery Does Not Charge

THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO 1994 VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO 2/14/94 (MDH 02-14-XX).

MODELS:

1994 (BR) Ram Truck (Diesel)

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Battery clamp bolt may corrode preventing secondary battery from charging. Symptoms may include white smoke on start up or hard starting in
temperatures below 40 degrees F. The secondary battery is connected in parallel to the primary. Corrosion at the clamp bolt may insulate the batteries
from each other and from the intake heater relay.

DIAGNOSIS:

1.

With a digital multimeter set on the appropriate DC voltage scale, connect the negative lead to the negative post of the primary battery (driver
side).

2.

With the ignition switch in the run position and the engine not running, measure the voltage across the primary battery to the positive post and
record the reading. The voltage should be 12.5 volts plus or minus .5 volts depending on the state of charge of the battery.

3.

Move the positive lead to the positive battery post on the secondary battery and measure the voltage. Record the reading.

4.

Start the engine and repeat the measurements taken in steps 1 through 3 above with the engine running. The battery voltage should now be 13.5 to
14.5 volts. Record the readings.

5.

There should be no significant difference between the readings taken either with the engine off or running. A difference of more than 0.1 volt (one
tenth of one volt) would indicate that the secondary battery is not receiving a complete charge. If the voltage readings differ by 0.1 volt or more,
perform the repair procedure.

Battery Clamp Bolt

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing the positive battery clamp bolt on the primary battery.

Remove the positive battery clamp bolt on the primary (drivers side) battery and replace the bolt with P/N 6035461. Tighten both nuts to 5.6 N-m (50
in.lbs.).

POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
