Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Service and Repair
Worn valve guides or cocked springs are sometimes mistaken for noisy lifters. Determine which lifter is noisy. If the application of side thrust on the
valve spring fails to noticeably reduce the noise, the lifter is probably faulty and should be removed for inspection. When installing hydraulic lifters in
the engine, fill them with light engine oil to avoid excessive time required to quiet them during initial operation of engine.
1. Remove air cleaner, valve cover, rocker assembly and pushrods. Mark push rods for installation reference.
2. Remove intake manifold as outlined under "Intake Manifold, Replace."
3. Remove cylinder head as outlined under "Cylinder Head, Replace" if end lifters are to be replaced.
4. Remove yoke retainer and aligning yokes, then pull lifter from bore with a twisting motion. If necessary, use hydraulic tappet remover/installer
tool No. C-4129-A, or equivalent.
5. Mark lifters for installation reference, then inspect. If lifters or bores are scored or show signs of sticking, ream bore to next oversize and obtain
corresponding oversize lifters.
6. Inspect camshaft lobes for abnormal wear.
7. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure oil bleed hole in lifter faces forward.
b. Do not run engine above fast idle until all hydraulic lifters have filled with oil and are quiet.
