NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The manual transmission shift lever may contact the instrument panel (IP) when shifting. In a vehicle equipped with a gas engine, this condition would
occur when selecting first, third, or fifth gear. For a diesel engine equipped vehicle, this condition would occur when selecting low, second, or overdrive
gear. This condition may be caused by the shift lever not being fully seated onto the shank of the transmission stub shaft.
DISCUSSION:
The NV4500 transmission stub shaft has a "dog leg" design that causes the top half of the stub shaft (the shank) to be offset. This design allows the stub
shaft to be installed two different ways (180 degrees). If the stub shaft is installed incorrectly, then the shift lever may contact the instrument panel.
For NVA500 light duty applications (5.2L/5.9L): The stub shaft must be installed so that the dog leg is toward the rear of the vehicle (top half of the stub
shaft is rearward of its lower half when in the neutral position).
For NV 4500 heavy duty applications (5.9L H.Duty/5.9L Diesel/8.0L): The stub shaft must be installed so that the dog leg is toward the front of the
vehicle (top half of the stub shaft is forward of its lower half when in the neutral position).
DIAGNOSIS:
Inspect the connection between the shift lever and the transmission stub shaft. The shift lever should be fully seated onto the transmission stub shaft such
that a 3 - 5 mm (0.120 - 0.200 in.) space exists between the bottom of the shift lever rubber isolator and the top edge of the stub shaft tool groove.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves seating the shift lever onto the transmission stub shaft.
