Ball Joint: Testing and Inspection
Upper Ball Joint

1. Raise and support vehicle, then install dial indicator and clamp assembly to lower suspension arm.
2. Position indicator plunger against knuckle arm and zero indicator.
3. Raise and lower wheel with a pry bar under center of tire.
4. Measure axial movement of knuckle with respect to suspension arm.
5. On Vans & '95 Pickup models, if travel of suspension arm is 0.021 inch or more, replace ball joint.
6. On 1996 Pickup models, if travel of suspension arm is 0.031 inch or more, replace ball joint.

UPPER

1. Position a suitable floor jack under lower suspension arm, then raise wheel and allow tire to lightly contact floor.
2. Mount a dial indicator on upper suspension arm, then position indicator plunger against upper ball joint boss of steering knuckle.
3. Grasp top of tire and apply force in and out. Inspect for movement at ball joint between upper suspension arm and knuckle.
4. On Van, Ramcharger & 1992-95 Pickup models, if any lateral movement is evident, then replace the ball joint.
5. On 1996 Pickup models, if lateral movement is 0.030 inch or more, replace the ball joint.
