Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair
The service oil seal is split into lower and upper halves. The upper seal half can be installed with the crankshaft removed or installed, but the lower seal
half can only be installed with the rear main bearing cap removed. When a new upper seal is installed, install a new lower seal.
UPPER SEAL
1. With crankshaft installed, proceed as follows:
a. Remove oil pan as outlined under Oil Pan/Service and Repair, then remove oil pump from rear main bearing cap.
b. Remove rear main bearing cap, then carefully remove and discard old lower and upper oil seals.
c. Loosen two main bearing caps forward of rear cap to facilitate new seal installation.
2. Clean cylinder block mating surfaces and ensure seal groove is free of debris, then apply a thin film of oil to new upper seal lips.
3. Install new upper seal with yellow paint facing rear of engine. If crankshaft was removed, position in cylinder block.
4. Install new lower seal as outlined in this section.
5. Apply a 1/5 inch drop of Loctite 515, or equivalent to each side of rear main bearing cap. Do not allow sealant to contact rubber seal. Install
bearing cap on block immediately after sealant application.
6. Align bearing cap using cap slot, alignment dowel and cap bolts. Do not remove excess material after assembly or strike rear cap more than twice
when aligning.
7. Install rear main bearing cap and alternately tighten bolts, including bolts loosened to facilitate seal installation, to specifications.
8. Install oil pump, then apply suitable silicone rubber adhesive sealant to joint between bearing cap and block to provide cap to block and oil pan
sealing.
9. Install oil pan immediately after sealant application. Refer to Oil Pan/Service and Repair for procedure.
LOWER SEAL
1. Remove oil pan as outlined under Oil Pan/Service and Repair, then the oil pump and rear main bearing cap. Discard old lower seal.
2. Clean rear main cap mating surfaces and oil pan seal grooves, then install new upper seal as outlined in this section.
3. Apply a thin film of oil to new lower seal lips, then install seal in bearing cap with yellow paint facing rear of engine.
4. Apply a 1/5 inch drop of Loctite 515, or equivalent to each side of rear main bearing cap. Do not allow sealant to contact rubber seal. Install
bearing cap on block immediately after sealant application.
5. Align bearing cap using cap slot, alignment dowel and cap bolts. Do not remove excess material after assembly or strike rear cap more than twice
