NOTE: 

THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A DIESEL ENGINE.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some vehicles may experience a whine or howl noise while driving at highway speeds. This noise may be miss-interpreted as turbo whine.

DIAGNOSIS:

Open both cab doors. Place the vehicle in park or neutral and set the parking brake. Start the engine and slowly apply the accelerator to increase engine
speed to approximately 2800 rpm. Listen for the whine or howl as the engine increases in rpm and especially as the engine passes through 1400 - 1500
rpm, 1900 - 2000 rpm, and 2100 - 2200 rpm. The noise will come and go as the engine rpm passes through the ranges but will not vary much in pitch or
frequency with engine speed or load.

NOTE: 

THE SPEED AT WHICH THE NOISE OCCURS AND THE LOUDNESS OF THE NOISE MAY VARY WITH EXHAUST SYSTEM
TEMPERATURE.

Drive the vehicle on a highway. The noise is most likely to occur in the 55 to 65 mph range at approximately 1900 to 2100 rpm.

As a final check, the noise may be modified or eliminated by firmly wedging a piece of wood between the flat area on the muffler and the frame rail. If
the noise is heard during the above diagnostic procedures and can be modified with the final check, perform the Repair Procedure.
