Alternator: Description and Operation
PURPOSE
Engine controller regulates field voltage to maintain charging system voltage between 12.9 volts and 15.0 volts.

If the engine controller senses low system voltage, it increases system voltage by increasing field voltage.

If engine controller senses high system voltage, controller reduces field voltage.
