Diagnosis By Symptom
Excessive Steering Wheel Freeplay
1.
Improper cross shaft adjustment.
2.
Column support spanner nut loose.
3.
Improper worm thrust bearing adjustment.
4.
Improper front wheel bearing adjustment.
Hard Steering Wheel Operation
1.
Tires not properly inflated.
2.
Low oil level in reservoir.
3.
Loose pump belt.
4.
Oil on pump belts.
5.
Steering linkage needs lubrication.
6.
Power steering pump output low.
7.
Cross shaft adjustment too tight.
8.
Pressure control valve stuck in closed position.
9.
External oil leaks.
10.
Defective or damaged valve lever.
11.
Dirt or chips in steering gear.
12.
Damaged column support worm shaft bearings.
13.
Damaged thrust bearings or excessive preload adjustment.
14.
Rough or hard to turn worm and piston assembly.
15.
Excessive internal leakage.
In One Direction
1.
Oil leaking past worm shaft cast iron seal ring or ferrule O-ring.
In Both Directions
1.
Broken O-ring on worm piston.
2.
Piston end plug loose.
3.
Pump belt slipping.
4.
Pump output low.
Left Turn
1.
Left turn reaction seal O-ring missing, damaged or worn.
2.
Left turn reaction oil passage not drilled in housing or cylinder head.
3.
Left turn reaction ring sticking in cylinder head.
Right Turn
1.
Right turn U-shaped reaction seal missing, damaged or worn.
2.
Right turn reaction oil passage not drilled in housing head or ferrule pin.
3.
Right turn reaction ring sticking in housing head.
In Both Directions
1.
Improper sector shaft adjustment.
2.
Pressure plates installed on wrong side of reaction rings.
Noisy Operation
1.
Buzzing noise in neutral only is caused by sticking pressure control valve.
2.
Noisy power pump.
3.
Damaged hydraulic lines.
4.
Pressure control valve sticking.
5.
Improper sector shaft adjustment.
6.
Air in system.
Poor Recovery From Turns
1.
Tires not properly inflated.
2.
Steering linkage binding.
3.
Improper wheel alignment.
4.
Damaged or defective steering tube bearings.
5.
Steering column jacket and steering gear not properly aligned.
