Air Diverter Solenoid: Description and Operation

Solenoid Trio

PURPOSE

Engine controller controls vacuum to air switching/relief valve through this solenoid.

OPERATION

If the engine controller grounds (ENERGIZES) the air switching solenoid, vacuum is allowed to flow to the air switching/relief valve, causing the
air to be injected upstream.

If the engine controller removes the ground (DE-ENERGIZES) from the air switching solenoid circuit, vacuum is not allowed to flow to the air
switching/relief valve, causing the air to be injected downstream.

During cold engine operation, the engine controller ENERGIZES solenoid, air injected into exhaust manifolds. After engine reaches normal
operating temperature, engine controller will DE-ENERGIZES solenoid, air injected downstream in catalytic convertor.
