NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO SHORT WHEEL BASE VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO OCT. 10, 1996 (MDH 1010XX) AND EQUIPPED
WITH A 2.4L ENGINE.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some subject vehicles may exhibit a buzz/rattle or exhaust leak noise. The noise can be heard coming from the area of the muffler when the exhaust
system is cold or the vehicle is accelerated light to moderately. These noises may be caused by an internal crack in the muffler.
DIAGNOSIS:
Start the engine. With the transmission in park and the parking brake set, slowly raise the engine speed to 3500 RPM and then back to idle. If a
buzz/rattle or exhaust leak noise is not heard, drive the vehicle and listen for the noises. The noises are most likely to be heard during initial light to
moderate acceleration.
