Timing Cover Gasket: Service and Repair

Timing Cover Seal Replace

1.

Perform steps 1 through 5 under ``Timing Chain Cover, Replace.''

2.

Using tool No. C-4762-1 on 1983 models, or C-748 on 1984---86 models, and a suitable wrench, insert tool over crankshaft nose and turn tool
firmly into seal.

3.

Tighten thrust screw to remove seal, then tap side of thrust screw to remove seal.

4.

Using tool No. C-4761 and a new seal drive seal into timing cover with lips of seal toward engine until tool stops against cover.

5.

Examine pulley hub for dirt and defects and polish with 400 grit sandpaper as necessary.

6.

Lubricate pulley hub and seal lip using a suitable lubricant, then align keyway and install crankshaft pulley, washer and bolt.

7.

Torque retaining bolt to 110 ft. lbs.

8.

Reverse steps 1 through 4 to assemble.
