Wheel Bearing: Adjustments
1985-88 COLT, EXC. 1988 WAGON
1. Raise and support rear of vehicle and remove wheel.
2. Ensure parking brake is fully released.
3. Check wheel bearing endplay with suitable dial indicator. Maximum allowable endplay is 0.008 inch.
4. Check hub and drum starting torque by rotating hub with suitable spring scale. Maximum allowable starting torque is 10.8 lbs.
5. If endplay or starting torque exceed limits, loosen bearing retaining nut, then retorque nut to 72-108 ft. lbs.
6. If endplay or starting torque are still not within limits, replace wheel bearings as needed.
1988 COLT WAGON
1. Raise and support rear of vehicle and remove wheel.
2. Ensure parking brake is fully released.
3. After turning hub a few times to seat it to the bearing, attach a spring balance to the hub bolt, and, pulling at a 90° angle from hub bolt, measure to
determine if rotary-sliding resistance of rear hub is 3.08 lbs. (or less) for a new bearing, or 2.42 lbs. (or less) when bearing is reused.
4. If reading exceeds specifications, locknut should be tightened or bearing should be replaced. After ensuring that hub rotates smoothly, securely
bend cotter pin.
