Symptom/Condition & Diagnosis Information
SYMPTOM/CONDITION
The steering wheel oscillation condition may occur in some subject vehicles at highway speeds and may be described by the owner as a shimmy in the
steering wheel..
FIGURE 1
DIAGNOSIS
Road test the vehicle to verify the complaint.. The steering wheel oscillation (shimmy) normally will occur at cruising speeds between 55 and 68 mph (88
to 109 km/h) with its peak at 65 mph (104 km/h) using test drive or in-shop testing (see InShop Testing Procedures in this bulletin). Do not confuse
steering shimmy (Figure 1) with braking and/or a body shake that results in vertical oscillation of entire body at highway speeds.
While road testing, determine if a brake vibration/pulsation exists. If so, correct the brake vibration as required. If machining of front rotors is required,
machine rotors on hubs.
In-Shop Test & Repair Procedures
IN-SHOP TEST PROCEDURES
A road test is recommended, however, in-shop testing can be performed if road conditions prevent road testing. The following is recommended for
in-shop testing:
1.
Check the tire pressures and adjust according to tire placard or operator's manual.
