Ball Joint: Service and Repair
LOWER BALL JOINT
1. Remove lower ball joint to lower control arm attaching bolts.
2. Loosen ball joint to steering knuckle nut, then using a suitable chisel between ball joint and steering knuckle, free ball joint stud from knuckle.
3. Remove ball joint stud nut and ball joint.
4. Using a torque wrench measure ball joint starting and rotating torque. Starting torque should be 9 ft. lbs. and rotating torque should be 2.2-4.3 ft.
lbs. Check ball joint boot for wear and damage.
5. Install ball joint and stud nut onto steering knuckle, then install ball joint to lower control arm attaching bolts. Torque ball joint stud nut to 40-51
ft. lbs. and ball joint to lower control arm attaching bolts to 69-87 ft. lbs.
