The catalytic converter is an emission control device added to the exhaust system to effectively reduce the levels of carbon monoxide and
hydrocarbons entering the atmosphere.
There are two types of catalytic converters used on these vehicles. The two types are, pellet type and monolithic type. The pellet type converter was
used on early models and incorporates palladium coated pellets to control emissions. On later models, the monolithic type converter is used. This
converter contains a honeycomb insert that is coated with palladium catalytic material, Fig. 32.
