Axle Bearing: Service and Repair

1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2. Remove rear brake drum, then remove brake shoes.
3. Disconnect brake line from wheel cylinder. Cap brake line and wheel cylinder fitting.
4. Disconnect parking brake cable from lever at backing plate.
5. Through holes in axle shaft flange remove bearing retainer attaching nuts.
6. Using tool a suitable puller, remove axle shaft from rear axle housing.
7. Press bearing assembly from axle shaft as necessary.
8. Using a suitable puller, remove oil seal from axle housing as necessary.
9. Reverse procedure to install. When installing replacement oil seal, apply suitable grease to axle housing to seal contact area. Also apply grease to

oil seal lip. Install seal using bearing installer tool Nos. MB990938 and MB990935 or equivalent. Prior to installation of axle bearing, assemble 
axle shaft to axle housing without packings and shims. Measure clearance between axle housing and backing plate. Refer to image to determine
proper amount of packings and shims to be installed.
