Oil Pump: Service and Repair

To remove oil pump pickup, refer to ``Oil Pan, Replace.''

The oil pump is of the gear type and is also used to drive the right counterbalance shaft. The oil pump drive gear has a sprocket driven by a chain. The
counterbalance shaft is mounted to the oil pump driven gear and rotates in the opposite direction of crankshaft rotation.

Remove timing chain as outlined under ``Timing Belt or Chain, Replace'' procedure.

Remove bolt locking oil pump driven gear to right balancer shaft, then the oil pump mounting bolts.

Remove the oil pump assembly.

When installing the oil pump, be sure that the keyway of the oil pump driven gear fits the Woodruff key at the end of the balancer shaft and that
the key does not go out of the keyway. After the oil pump assembly has been correctly installed, firmly tighten the oil pump mounting bolts. Next,
tighten the balancer shaft and driven gear mounting bolts. If the fit of the Woodruff key and driven gear is too tight, first insert the balancer shaft
into the oil pump, temporarily tighten the bolt and insert the balancer shaft and oil pump as an assembly in the cylinder block. Fill the oil pump
with a sufficient amount of engine oil (more than .6 cu. in.) prior to installation.
