Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair
2 Wheel Drive
REMOVAL
1. Block brake pedal in the up position. Raise vehicle and remove wheel cover and wheel and tire assembly. Remove caliper retainer and anti-rattle
spring assemblies.
2. Remove caliper from disc by sliding out and away from disc. Hang caliper out of the way. Do not let caliper hang or be supported by hydraulic
brake hose. Remove inboard shoe.
3. Remove hub cap, cotter key, nut, washer, and outer bearing.
4. Carefully slide disc assembly from steering knuckle. Do not drag seal or inner bearing over steering knuckle thread (thread, bearing and oil seal
may be damaged). Remove splash shield and discard dust seal.
5. Place jack under outer end of lower control arm.
6. Disconnect tie rod at steering knuckle arm. See: Tie Rod/Tie Rod End/Service and Repair
7. Separate steering knuckle and steering knuckle arm from ball joints. Place assembly on bench or floor.
8. Remove mounting bolts holding brake adapter, steering knuckle arm and steering knuckle together. Separate components.
INSTALLATION
1. Install brake adapter on steering knuckle and tighten mounting bolts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
2. Align steering knuckle arm to steering knuckle. Install mounting bolts and tighten to 215 ft. lbs. (291 Nm).
3. Mount steering knuckle to control arms and install mounting nuts. Tighten to 135 ft. lbs. (183 Nm). Install cotter keys.
4. Connect tie rod end. Install and tighten nut to 45 ft. lbs. Install cotter keys.
5. Position new dust seal on steering knuckle. Install splash shield and tighten mounting bolts to 220 in. lbs. (25 Nm).
6. Carefully slide disc assembly into position. Install outer bearing, washer and nut. Adjust wheel bearing and install cotter key, nut, and hub cap.
7. Locate inboard shoe on adapter with shoe flanges in adapter ways. Slowly slide caliper assembly into position in adapter and over disc. Align
caliper on machined ways of adapter. Be careful not to pull the dust boot from its grooves as the piston and boot slide over the inboard shoe.
8. Install anti-rattle springs and retaining Clips and torque to 180 in. lbs. (20 Nm). The inboard shoe anti-rattle spring must always be installed on top
of the retainer spring plate.
9. Install wheel and tire assembly and wheel cover.
10. Remove jack, lower vehicle and test operation.
