Valve Spring: Service and Repair

DISASSEMBLE

1.

Remove cylinder head as previously described.

2.

On engines equipped with jet valve, remove jet valve assembly, using wrench tool No. MD998310 or equivalent. 
NOTE:

Make sure tool is square with respect to center of jet valve. If tool is tilted, valve stem may be bent by force of valve spring retainer.

3.

Using a suitable valve spring compressor, remove intake valve retainer lock, marking relative position of each to facilitate installation.

4.

Remove valve spring retainer, then the valve spring.

5.

Remove valve spring seat, then the intake valves.

6.

Remove and discard valve stem seals, then the intake valve guides and seats.

7.

Using a suitable valve spring compressor, remove exhaust valve retainer lock, marking relative position of each to facilitate installation.

8.

Remove valve spring retainer, then the valve spring.

9.

Remove valve spring seat, then the exhaust valves.

10.

Remove and discard valve stem seals, then the exhaust valve guides and seats. 

INSPECTION

1.

Check each valve for wear and damage or defects in valve head and stem. Replace valve if unable to repair.

2.

If stem tip has been pitted, grind stem tip slightly. Also grind valve face slightly.

3.

Check stem to guide clearance. If clearance is not within specification, replace valve and/or valve guide as necessary.

4.

Replace valve if margin of face has decreased to less than 0.028 inch for intake valves and 0.059 inch for exhaust valves.

5.

If improper contact with valve seat is evident, reseat valve.

6.

Check valve seat for evidence of overheating and improper contact with valve face, and replace as necessary.

7.

Check valve spring free height should measure 1.921 inches. If spring does not meet specification, replace as necessary.

8.

Test spring for squareness; if it exceeds 1.5°, replace spring. 

ASSEMBLE

1.

Reverse disassembly procedure to assemble and note the following: 
a.

Apply engine oil to each valve. Insert valves into guides, using care not to damage seal.

b.

Valve spring should be installed with identification color side directed toward valve spring retainer.

c.

Using a suitable valve spring compressor, compress spring and install retainer lock.
