SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Some vehicles built before March 1990 equipped with Automatic Free Wheel Hubs may exhibit a front suspension noise, shake or shudder condition in
the 4WD mode under load. This condition may be caused by a broken "B" brake key in the Automatic Locking Hubs assembly. Breaking of the "B"
brake is the result of excessive friction between the hub "A" brake and "B" brake.
DIAGNOSIS
Begin a road test in the 2WD mode, make three or four heavy accelerations to 35/40 MPH. Shift transfer case into 4WD mode, make three or four heavy
accelerations to 35/40 MPH. If a front axle disturbance (noise, shake, shudder) was felt only in the 4WD mode, remove both the hubs and inspect the
"B" brake key (Figure 1). If the "B" brake key(s) is broken or damaged, perform the following repair procedure.

This repair involves the disassembly of the hub and the installation of the hub brake kit.
